How To Prepare for a Zoom Interview

How to prepare for a Zoom interview is a question that is on a lot of peoples minds at the moment. In the current climate, more and more companies are hiring people to work from home, and covid restrictions have meant that most companies are turning to things like Zoom and other online services to conduct their interview process. This may be a situation that is alien to a lot of people in the current job market.

We have compiled a list of things that you can do to better prepare yourself for that all-important zoom interview.

Get To Know Zoom!

Before your interview starts you should familiarise yourself with zoom and how it works. Perhaps you could do a practice call with a friend or family member. Make sure you know exactly how it all works before that all-important call.

Clear Your Space

You should have a distraction-free area before you begin your interview. make sure that nothing is embarrassing or inappropriate in the background, and try to make sure that you are in an area that will not be distracting for you either.

Be On-Time

This goes without saying, but the difference between zoom interviews and regular interviews is that you don’t want to be early to your Zoom call. Depending on the set up of the interviewer you could potentially accidentally boot a previous contender out of their meeting or come in on the interview of another candidate. If the meeting starts at 2, be there at 2. That would be the best practice.

Be Prepared

As with any other interview always prepare answers to the most commonly asked interview questions. It would be easy to fall into a false sense of security as you are at home, however, don’t become too complacent. Preparation is always key to securing any new role.

Write Down Questions

This is one of the benefits of a zoom call. You can have a list of questions written out and kept somewhere in your eye line but off-camera.

Be Mindful Of What You Are Wearing

The temptation to stay in your PJ’s is strong at the moment, however, this is not advisable for a Zoom interview. Even though you are in your own home, it is still a professional interview and your environment and personal appearance should be treated in the same manner as if you were going in to have a face to face interview. It will make a good impression. It is always good to remember to dress for success.

Mind Your Diction

Remember to speak slowly and concisely. It can sometimes be hard to understand people over an online connection so make sure you are being loud, clear and articulate in your speech.

Watch Your Body Language

This is the same as if you were in a face to face interview. It is easy to get distracted by the little box onscreen where we can see ourselves during a Zoom call. It would be best to hide this as it can be too distracting. Maintain eye contact by looking in the camera, sit with your arms unfolded in an open and welcoming manner. Try to avoid fidgeting if at all possible.

Double Check Times, Dates And Time Zones

Because we are living in a world that has a global economy, more and more companies are looking to hire people who do not live in their countries, regions or time zones. The rise in remote working has gotten rid of borders for a lot of positions. Make sure that if you are interviewing with a foreign company that you know which time they mean when they say a time for the interview.

Don’t Be Afraid To Speak Up!

It can be a daunting experience to sit in front of your computer or tablet screen and engage in a full-on interview with a  group or even just one stranger. but just because this experience may take you out of your comfort zone, do not be afraid to speak up and ask questions or make comments if it is necessary to do so!

When all is said and done, a Zoom interview is just like any other interview and the same rules in general apply. However, if you are feeling nervous or unsure, hopefully, these top tips from us will help you achieve interview success!
